What do you do at UNE Online?

I am a Student Support Specialist for the Master of Social Work program. Prior to joining the MSW program, I had worked as a Support Specialist for the Doctorate of Education and the Master of Public Health programs. As a Support Specialist, I’m there for the students from the moment they confirm their acceptance to when they confer their degree.

Where are you from?

I was born in An Khe, a small town in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam. I moved to Portland, Maine as part of the United States’ Orderly Departure Program (ODP) when I was five years old and Maine has been my home since!

What’s your favorite dessert?

I’ll eat sweets once in a while, but if fruit counts in this category then I would choose fruit over any sweets. I love all the Southeast Asian fruit – jackfruit, papaya, mango, logan, rumutan and yes even durian (known probably as the stinkiest fruit to humankind).

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

Hit the snooze button to buy myself an extra ten minutes in bed.

What’s the most recent lesson you learned?

You have control over two things – your thoughts and your actions. When we stop spending our energy on things we cannot control, we achieve greater happiness in our life. It’s a simple lesson that I remind myself often.

What’s your favorite part about your work as a Student Support Specialist?

Graduation is easily the highlight of my job. Our relationships with our students go beyond just advising them on what courses to register or what books to order. We are on their journey with them when they experience great joy and even sometimes great losses in their lives. We hear about their struggles on securing a placement but also the rewarding experience of being in their placement. When they cross that stage and get hooded, I am filled with tremendous joy because I know for many of our students they had to sacrifice a lot in order to get to this point. I’m so honored to have played a small role in it all.

If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Anything my mother cooks! Rice is the common staple.

baby Olivia

Favorite book?

At the moment, it’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. We have been reading that to our 9 month-old daughter lately as part of her bedtime routine.

What’s your motto?

Work hard and be nice to people. It’s a very simple motto I try to live by daily.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Maine?

There are many things I love about Maine. But one of my favorite things is watching the sunset. I live with my family out on a small island off the coast of Portland, Maine, so the view is pretty phenomenal when you catch a good one.

Do you have a secret talent?

I wouldn’t call it a talent, but most people may not know that I was part of a Latin dance group during college. You can often see me dancing when a Latin song is on.

What’s your ideal Sunday?

Right now, being able to sleep through the night and wake up past 6:00 am is a good start. Anything after that is a bonus.
