CHEM 1000 is a three-credit chemistry course that introduces the principles of general, organic, and biological chemistry that are relevant to students interested in health-related and other professions. Students will gain familiarity with concepts such as: atomic theory, measurements, significant figures, dimensional analysis, chemical compounds and their bonds, molecular geometry, polarity, the mole concept, and stoichiometry, redox reactions and energetics of chemical reactions, gases, solutions, acids and bases and nuclear chemistry. This will be followed by a thorough introduction to structural formulas, chemical and physical properties of organic compounds and, finally, the biochemistry of nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and metabolism.
*This course is considered an upper-level undergraduate course (300 level or above).
All exams are taken online. Major exams are required to be proctored online through ProctorU. For instructions on how to take your exams online, visit UNE Online’s ProctorU site. Please note exams must also be proctored with the UNE-approved external webcam.
CHEM 1000 is a lecture-only course. We do not offer an associated lab component for this course.

Working at the pace typical for a four-semester hour course, the average student will complete this online course in approximately 16 weeks.
