Students develop the science foundation required for advanced health study through coursework in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, and more. Courses emphasize scientific reasoning, conceptual mastery, and applied problem-solving, supporting both professional school readiness and graduate-level health science study. UNE students and alumni also have access to discounted MCAT, DAT, and GRE preparation through Kaplan.
Learners can choose the pathway that fits their goals. The Science Prerequisites for Health Professions (SPHP) program offers more than 35 individual online courses with no application required, ideal for students filling specific prerequisite gaps. The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Certificate (PBPH) is a structured, customizable 18–30 credit program for students seeking a comprehensive prerequisite plan, dedicated advising, and the option to earn a committee letter to strengthen their professional school applications.

SPHP does not require an application. Students register directly through the online self-service portal, with new course start dates on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month (excluding January). The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Certificate does require an application, though there is no application fee or GRE requirement. Admission is holistic and considers academic background, relevant experience, and a personal statement.
Yes. Any regionally accredited bachelor’s degree qualifies. The program takes a holistic approach to admissions and welcomes applicants from diverse academic backgrounds. A minimum 2.5 cumulative undergraduate GPA is recommended.
SPHP courses are offered in 6-, 8-, and 16-week formats, with students completing individual courses based on their pace and prior knowledge. Most PBPH students complete the 18–30 credit certificate within 1–2 years; students with no previous science coursework may take longer. Your academic advisor will help you build a plan that fits your timeline.
SPHP students should expect approximately 15 hours per week to complete a 16-week course on schedule. PBPH students across UNE Online programs report an average of 15–19 hours per week on coursework. It is recommended that students log in to their courses multiple times per week.
Yes. UNE Online’s pre-health programs are designed with working adults and career changers in mind. Courses are asynchronous with no set meeting times, allowing students to balance coursework with professional and personal commitments.
The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Certificate does not accept transfer credits — all 18–30 required credits must be completed through UNE Online courses. The customizable curriculum allows students to take only the courses they need. SPHP does not involve transfer credits since students enroll in individual courses; whether SPHP credits transfer to another institution is determined by the receiving school.
The University of New England is regionally accredited through the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE), and many professional schools accept UNE Online pre-health coursework, including online labs. Acceptance policies vary by program, so students are encouraged to confirm requirements directly with the schools they plan to apply to. UNE’s student support team can provide course descriptions and syllabi to assist with verification.
Tuition for both SPHP and PBPH is $475 per credit, with a $45 registration fee per course. PBPH total tuition ranges from $8,550 to $14,250 depending on the number of credits required.
Master of Biomedical Science: Yes, financial aid may be available. UNE Online encourages students seeking financial assistance to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Many students qualify for Direct Subsidized and/or Direct Unsubsidized loans.
Post-Bacc Pre-Health Certificate: Federal financial aid is not available for the Post-Bacc Pre-Health program. Private loans, military benefits, and employer tuition assistance may be used to help manage program costs.
Science Prerequisites for Health Professions: Courses enrolled in by a non-matriculated student are not eligible for federal financial aid, including federal student loans, scholarships, or grants, per the Department of Education. Private loans, military benefits, and employer tuition assistance may be used to fund SPHP coursework.
