Leadership Series Topics

UNE Online’s Leadership Series offering is comprised of 4 topics where participants can choose to take any of the offerings. By completing this certificate, participants will be well-equipped to navigate the complexities of leadership and communication in today’s professional world, driving both personal and organizational success.

Topic 1: Navigating Crucial and Difficult Conversations (4 weeks)
We are all confronted with having to have crucial and difficult conversations. That statement is particularly true in the workplace and for those who hold leadership positions. Some leaders avoid the conversations, which causes issues to fester and become worse and more difficult over time. Effective leaders learn how to have crucial and difficult conversations in a timely manner, and with an approach that is based upon mutual trust and honesty, avoid passing judgement, actively listen, and speak in specifics.

In this course, participants will:

  • Examine a Critical Success Factor – Building Trusting Relationships
  • Assess concepts of mental fitness that help participants understand how they are “showing up” and how to assess their emotional connection to the situation
  • Analyze The Art of Communication – going beyond listening to what people are saying and listening for what is meant behind their words
  • Determine when to use a “coaching” approach versus a more “directive/managing” approach
  • Review their own and others communication styles
  • Identify specific guidelines for actually having crucial conversations

Topic 2: Compassionate Leadership (4 weeks)
Compassionate Leadership is the effective application of essential hard and soft skills needed to build healthy, productive, and sustainable teams that succeed in business today. Rising business leaders stand at the crossroads of authority and accountability. Their role is among the most difficult in today’s organizations. Whether you are a rising leader who has just been promoted, has hit a plateau in producing results, or one who needs help navigating organizational change, you need compassionate leadership skills to maintain and build your career momentum.

In this course, participants will learn to:

  • Learn the 4 Compassionate Leadership areas of focus and understand the definition of 3 essential skills in each area.
  • Develop the ability to diagnose problems that call for solutions using one or more of the compassionate leadership skills.
  • Recognize which compassionate leadership skills can be most effectively applied in various situations.
  • Identify ongoing competency development opportunities to develop individual skills within the 4 Compassionate Leadership areas of focus.
  • Gain an appreciation for involving team members, colleagues, supervisors, and sponsors in their journey to develop into compassionate leaders.

Topic 3: Emotional Intelligence (4 weeks)
In today’s interconnected and ever-evolving work environment, effective leadership is associated with professionals who not only understand and manage their own emotions but also recognize the effects these have on others. Central to this are key emotional intelligence (EI) skills such as empathy, assertiveness, stress tolerance, and self-awareness, all of which can be quantified and sharpened. This course delves into these pivotal EI skills and their ties to various leadership theories. A combination of theoretical insights, practical EI exercises, and introspective assessments aims to enhance your leadership capabilities to the next level.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define and Understand Emotional Intelligence: This segment entails a deep dive into the origins and influences of our emotions, coupled with an exploration of the multiple intelligence theory.
  • Identify Several Emotional Intelligence Skills: We will investigate these EI skills and their correlation with effective leadership, followed by a discussion on methodologies for their assessment and cultivation.
  • Apply EI to Leadership Theories: Participants will examine the progression of leadership development theories over the last three decades, acknowledging the growing significance of emotional intelligence skills.
  • Discuss EI Skills & Feedback: There are many times when leaders’ EI strengths can become their weakness, which can be revealed during the feedback process.
  • Develop and apply EI Skills: Participants will discover diverse strategies to bolster their overall emotional intelligence, utilizing a range of resources including exercises, literature, scholarly articles, and multimedia content.

Topic 4: Motivational Interviewing (4 weeks)
This course is designed for managers, team leaders, and aspiring leaders who want to enhance their leadership skills through the application of motivational interviewing (MI). By integrating principles from Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the course focuses on enhancing intrinsic motivation and meeting the psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness of those you lead. Participants will become familiar with how motivational interviewing can inform a motivating and supportive environment that drives both personal and organizational growth.

Participants will:

  • Synthesize Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) principles to enhance leadership effectiveness.

Upon the successful completion of any Leadership Course, you will receive a certificate of completion.

You will be assessed on your comprehension of course material via quizzes and application of new concepts and skills when you complete assignments. You must submit all the assignments as defined in the course and grading rubrics in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. Discussions, facilitator support and feedback will be available to all participants.
