Compassion Fatigue, Trauma Stewardship & Sustainable Good Work

Workshop Description:

In this historical context, educators are experiencing compassion fatigue. Also referred to as vicarious trauma, this outcome of working with people who have experienced their own trauma and mental health challenges, can lead to burnout. The concept of Trauma Stewardship gives practitioners a framework for better understanding their own trauma exposure responses. This symposium module will explore the concept of Trauma Stewardship and strategies you can employ to help your teams move through some of the common trauma responses that prevent us from sustainable work.

Objectives:
At the completion of this certificate course, you will be able to:

  • Define key concepts related to trauma stewardship, including compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout.
  • Recognize the signs and impacts of chronic stress on the brain and body, both in oneself and in people we serve.
  • Define the ethical responsibility of trauma stewardship and its role in fostering healthy helping relationships.
  • Identify personal triggers and responses to stress and assess how these influence their professional effectiveness and personal well-being.
  • Implement strategies such as reflective journaling, self-care practices, and stress management techniques to sustain their ability to help others effectively.
  • Differentiate between compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction and evaluate their presence in their professional experiences.
  • Analyze trauma exposure responses and develop tailored approaches to mitigate their effects, as informed by Laura van der Lipski’s trauma stewardship model.
  • Cultivate resilience and self-awareness to sustain long-term engagement in their helping professions.
