End-of-Life Doula Professional Certificate

Provide compassionate end-of-life care to individuals and their families

The University of New England Online College of Professional Studies is offering an 8-week, 100% online End-of-Life Doula Certificate program designed to provide participants with the skills required to deliver compassionate, informed and supportive care for individuals and their families who are experiencing terminal illness or are nearing end-of-life. With UNE’s proven track record of preparing participants to work in a variety of health professions, this program is ideal for professionals and clinicians already working in the healthcare field to bolster their ability to support patients in end-of-life situations.

Participants in the End-of-Life Doula Certificate program will develop an understanding of how compassionate care, support, and advocacy through service can complement end-of-life care provided by the medical system. End-of-Life Doulas may serve as a non-medical care provider, who companion with individuals, families, and informal care-workers throughout the dying process in anticipation of end-of-life while focusing on physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the dying person and their loved ones.

As an end-of-life doula, participants will be able to:

  • Provide Emotional Support: As an end-of-life doula, you have the opportunity to provide invaluable emotional support to individuals and their families during the challenging and sensitive end-of-life journey.
  • Give Comfort and Peace: You can help create a peaceful and comfortable environment for the person nearing the end of their life by offering gentle companionship, listening, and being present with them.
  • Deliver Education and Guidance: You can educate and guide individuals and their families through the dying process, providing information about various options, resources, and support services available to them.
  • Help to Empower: End-of-life doulas empower individuals to express their wishes, make decisions about their care, and ensure their desires are respected, promoting a sense of dignity and control.
  • Provide Bereavement Support: End-of-life doulas often provide bereavement support to the family after the individual has passed away, offering a compassionate presence during the grieving process.
  • Create a Holistic Approach: End-of-life doulas focus on holistic care, considering physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and supporting individuals in finding comfort and meaning in their final days.

Please Note: This certificate program is for educational purposes only and is not intended to provide legal, financial, or medical advice. An End-of-Life Doula role is unlicensed and unregulated. Upon completion of the University of New England End-of-Life Doula Certificate program, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

In addition: If someone important to you has died recently or you are experiencing acute grief, it is recommended that you give yourself time to process and recover. Taking this time will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the death, evaluate your personal experience with grief and coping mechanisms, and integrate these experiences into your life. This will also ensure that when you register for the UNE End-of-Life Doula certificate program, you will be able to engage fully in the challenging and sometimes activating topics, focus effectively on the curriculum, and develop the skillset to become an effective End-of-Life Doula.

From the Faculty

“As a PT practitioner and teacher I have long been curious about end of life, and this course was an amazing way to explore and expand my understanding of the subject. The course includes lots of resources and with it being self-paced it allows time for additional introspection and meaningful reflection. A bonus of the course was coming together with the other students and sharing our experiences, which continues even after the end of the course as we discuss how we can continue to support each other and help each other figure out our next steps."

Molly Collin, PT of 25 years treating both adults and children and an adjunct faculty in the DPT program at UNE
